Guitar Workshops On The Road

SERVE UP SOME HOT LICKS

Will you be hosting an event featuring Toby Walker? While he's in town, why not have him conduct a guitar workshop for your guitar playing patrons? It's easy enough to do. When you send out your mailing advertising the concert, be sure to include the information provided below about a Guitar Workshop. If you need any help just contact Toby's agent, McShane Glover and she'll be more than happy to assist you with the details about setting up this terrific, unique event.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN SAY:
Take your playing to a new level with a guitar workshop from Toby Walker. Toby is a master of the fingerpicking country blues styles and has been teaching them for over 25 years. A regular teacher at Jorma Kaukonen’s (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane) Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp, Toby will not only teach you hot licks and techniques but will also show you how to apply these to songs you already know.

QUOTES FROM SOME HAPPY STUDENTS:
“I cannot tell you how wonderful your class was - how much I learned - the world it opened up to me” - Ricky - Atlanta GA

“Where to begin. Wow!! Experience of a lifetime. I learned a great deal in your class and I have enough material to last me a very long time” - Bob - NC

“I had a great time in your class and already am seeing a bunch of new ideas finding my way into my playing” - Tom - MN

Skill Level: Intermediate
Students must have knowledge of the following skills: first position chords and basic right hand techniques; simple fingerpicking including arpeggios, with alternating thumb and rudimentary Travis picking; basic familiarity with hammering on, pulling off and sliding on strings.

Class size is limited to 12 people. Students will be provided with tablature and are encouraged to bring their choice of recording equipment. Video recording will be prohibited.

Guitar Lessons In My Home (the treehouse)

No matter where I am, be it at a little bar, concert hall or festival, someone usually asks me 'Gee, how'd you do that?' Thats when I get all giddy and grab the nearest guitar to show them a cool lick. Next to performing, teaching is another one of my great passions. Nothing thrills me more than seeing the 'light switch go on' when I turn a student on to a new lick, song, or way of understanding something. My motto is 'Whatever I know, I'll teach.' The late Eugene Powell, a fantastic bluesman from Mississippi once told me to 'carry the blues on for him' and I mean to do just that. He was very generous in teaching me and I feel honored to do carry on that tradition.

I give lessons out of my home on available weeknights.

If you live in the Northern New Jersey area and would like to take private lessons, please contact me at:

I teach the following styles from beginning to advanced levels:

  • Acoustic Fingerstyle Blues.... styles range from Mississippi Delta to East Coast Piedmont
  • Acoustic Fingerstyle Ragtime.... covering Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Gary Davis and others
  • Bottleneck Slide Guitar
  • Improvising Lead While Playing Bass
  • Electric Blues Improvisation
  • Music Theory

Here's an ending in the Key of E that I learned from the late Eugene Powell of Greenville MS. You start off in the 5th position. Bend the second string up on the 7th fret with your 3rd finger. The following triplet is played by barring your 1st finger at the 4th fret across the D, G and B strings, while strecthing your 4th finger to the 7th fret. Have fun!
