New DC-1 from Black Pearl Guitars. The 'Junkyard Dog' prototype.
From the builder, Dennis MacPherson
I had been building Martin style OO (Concert) guitars for quite a long time upon request but I always had an issue with the aesthetics. The looks were just OK but I always preferred a rounder look with a more balanced rounder upper and lower bout. Not to mention there are no after market generic cases for that specific size guitar - all of the builds required a custom case to be built adding a significant cost to my customer. That being said I did not have an original offering in the mid size category to compete. It occurred to me that a great concert size instrument could compete in that space. I wanted to build something a bit different that would be suitable for the delta and ragtime genre that would retain a strong lower mid and crisp top end with drop tuning. I am not that much of a ladder brace fan personally ( a bit too stiff for me ) but I do understand the interest, making another warm sounding guitar would put it in a different category. So the attempt was to build concert size guitar between Ladder and toasty with strong stable character suitable for finger pics. I also widened the string spacing on this model to 2-3/8" at the bridge making it extremely comfortable for working hands and reaching in with finger pics I find this to be a very suiable spacing for me personally whether I am picking or strumming. After doing some checking I found this spacing was very typical at the turn of the turn of the century 1800's to 1900'. I don't think this model is for the sweet tender picker but rather a picker with attitude, it will remain strong and in your face when you're working hard. This model will be known as the DC-1 with a Junkyard Dog on the Label.
